How the London Taxi keeps established brands moving
Global brands face a particular challenge simply because they are so well known. Fame is valuable, but it also means much of their communication reaches people who have encountered the brand many times before.
That makes the context in which advertising appears important. A familiar brand has recognition working in its favour, but recognition alone does not guarantee that an individual piece of communication will be remembered.
Our recent research into Dynamic Context offers an interesting way of looking at this, beginning with the Taxi itself.
Recognition comes with the format
The London Taxi is recognisable before it carries an advert.
That matters because the advertising is appearing in a type of context already. The vehicle has its own established visual identity – familiar, even when the advertising on it is new.
Our 2026 research via Attest found that 68% of people who recalled seeing a branded Taxi said it was the shape of the vehicle that stuck in their minds.
For an established brand, that provides a useful starting point. But familiarity only gets you so far.
How the familiar can get noticed
A familiar format could easily become part of the background. The reason the Taxi is interesting is that its familiarity does not necessarily make it predictable.
The same 2026 research, conducted as part of our study into Dynamic Context via Attest, found that 76.5% of respondents agreed that Taxi advertising grabs their attention because it is different from the norm.
The environment is doing some of the work here. A Taxi can be an unusual place to encounter advertising. The research found another relevant distinction. 80% of respondents agreed that adverts on Taxis usually seem fresh because they are seen in different places each time.
The creative may stay the same, but its surroundings do not.
That means the Taxi offers something beyond simple familiarity: a familiar format in which the advertising can still appear distinctive. That is the underlying mechanic of Dynamic Context: the advertising remains recognisable while the context around it changes.
Why this matters for established brands
Good advertising has always had to earn attention. The Taxi doesn't change that. Its value is what happens around that attention.
The format is already familiar (we would say iconic!), so the brand appears on something people recognise. The advertising can then provide the interruption: research respondents described Taxi advertising as ‘fresh’ and ‘different from the norm’. And because the Taxi moves, subsequent exposures do not have to happen in the same place, against the same backdrop, which creates a different kind of frequency.
The message can remain consistent while the context changes around it. The research suggests that this changing context can contribute to freshness and, ultimately, memorability.
That distinction matters for established brands because their challenge is not simply to be seen again. They already have recognition. The challenge is to make repeated exposure continue to have value when people have encountered the brand many times before.
Ubiquitous taxi advertising can give good advertising a physical environment that changes from one exposure to the next. Not simply more exposure, but repeated exposure in changing contexts, creating more opportunities for the brand to be noticed and remembered.
